There are 5 stages of dental decay
Stage I WHITE SPOTS
This is the initial stage of dental decay where small white spots are formed on the surface of the tooth due to acids produced by bacteria. However if diagnosed early can be completely reversible with the help of fluoride and remineralising gels
Stage II ENAMEL DECAY
This is decay formed on the outermost layer of the tooth. This stage usually requires you to visit your dentist for a dental restoration
Stage III DENTIN DECAY
When enamel decay is left untreated ,the acids leech deeper into the tooth causing dentin decay.Patient can feel mild to moderate sensitivity during this phase. At this point a dental restoration is mandatory.
Stage IV AND V INVOLVEMENT OF THE PULP AND ABSCESS FORMATION
At this stage the acids have travelled deeper towards the center into the pulp causing mild to moderate pain. This stage requires a ROOT CANAL TREATMENT.If a root canal treatment is not performed ,the bacteria may travel deeper into the tooth structure near the tip of the roots causing an abscess. This stage may require cleaning the area around the root tip along with a Root canal treatment.
