Sedation Dentistry

Sedation is a medical procedure where the drug is administered orally/intravenously to calm patients who are anxious during dental procedures.

The different types of sedation used in dentistry are – Oral(with the help of medicines), Conscious Sedation(with the use of Nitrous Oxide gas), Intravenous Sedation(with the help of injectable medicines) and lastly General Anaesthesia(rarely used)

The Intravenous Sedation immediate effect usually lasts for upto 45 mins – 1hr after withdrawal of the medication. However it usually takes 24 – 48 hrs for the drug to be completely eliminated from our body.

Conscious Sedation and/ Intravenous procedure requires specialised equipment.Though these procedures can be done in the clinic; for the benefit of the patient’s overall well being and safety we recommend these procedures to be done in a hospital environment. However these procedures do not require the patient to be hospitalised. The patient can be discharged after 2 hrs of the procedure.

Most or any dental procedure can be done under sedation depending on the patient’s anxiety levels. The most common procedure done under sedation is removal of impacted wisdom tooth. Root Canal procedures can also be done under sedation.

Sedation Procedures are a boon for treating patients who are differently abled and for small kids who are very scared or anxious of the dental procedures. Sedation increases the patient’s overall cooperation by reducing the anxiety levels and enables the dentist to provide quality dental care with the least amount of time and sittings required.
